I think it may happen eventually, but definitely not at this generation. What's crucial for Amazon's strategy is customer experience. Open the market to third parties at this stage will bring a lot supporting headaches. It is sort of like Mac vs. Windows analogy.
But in order to be successful in the long term, Amazon have to work with experience hardware makers like Sony. I wouldn't surprise if they quit making the dumb terminals and become a entity like the media distribution company.
