If you have updated your firmware then calibre, at any version, is not safely supporting directly updating the kobo database. Newer versions of calibre simply inform you of this fact via a warning message. Additionally for safety sake the newer version of calibre also prevents calibre's kobo driver from attempting to update the newer database. Books still transfer to your device.
