Correct type was set. But I did it all again anyway. Still no luck. The configuration dialogue box continues ignore any custom columns I create. Just one more try and it worked. Persistence pays off. Thanks. I'll trial Calibre and the various plugins for a week or two before making a decision if they are really for me or not (ie before I take a trip to PayPal)
