Yes, 2/3rds was about where it started to slow down.

You could always test by converting your html to epub using eCub ( http://www.juliansmart.com/ecub) and see if that fixes your problem.

Thanks for the link to eCub. Worth a try. As for non-standard formatting, yes this html had some. There were inline graphics and also a small quote at the start of each chapter that was formatted quite differently from the main text.
