The latest epubcheck (v 1.2) doesn't produce an error if that file is present. It's certainly non-standard, and was introduced by Apple for their 'Fixed-Layout' nonsense. You don't really need it, since the default fonts in iBooks have a pretty wide glyph set, but it can be used to force iBooks to respect the fonts that are embedded, see http://www.pigsgourdsandwikis.com/20...phone-and.html .
