For a change, Sony is getting away from its tendency to make proprietary products that require consumer lock-in to succeed. Remember Memory Stick, and the infamous rootkit fiasco a few years back?

In a world that's becoming increasingly open-source, proprietary anything doesn't work very well and turns consumers off.
