They all have a common theme of the strong preying upon the weak.
"The weak are meat for the strong to eat." There's a reason the book starts off with a discussion of cannibals.

“Why fight the 'natural' (oh, weaselly word!) order of things? Why? Because of this―one fine day, a purely predatory world shall consume itself. In an individual, selfishness uglifies the soul; for the human species, selfishness is extinction.”

It's sort of an anti-Atlas Shrugged.

Individually, the stories are fairly simplistic, but the structure (which is abandoned by the movie) makes the book.
