Reading in landscape worked, but I prefer reading in portrait and moving to the section I want to read (mainly magazines, so articles I'm interested in tend to be spread all over the page where landscape is just not practical).
For scanned pdfs it greatly depends on how well done the scan is. If the texts edges are too light for example, zooming in makes reading really hard as the text seems to be washed out on the edges.
