Unhappy Viewing or Converting PDF for NOOK HD

Specifically, I am having an issue with the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books that I've loaded onto my son's NOOK. The books are in PDF form. I typically use Calibre to convert them to ePub and Mobi but neither of these formats or PDF display properly on the NOOK HD.

These books are unique in that there are many pages with lines drawn on them (like notebook paper) with "hand written" text. After the conversion, depending on which profile I use in Calibre I either don't see the "hand written" text or the formatting is waaaaay off.

The thing I find most troubling is that every one of these formats (PDF, MOBI, ePUB) look fine when viewed in Calibre, Fox-it Reader (PDF), and the Kindle app (computer and phone). I don't get it.

I see that Calibre does not have a NOOK HD profile. Could that be it? Is there a way to make this work?

Thanks for any help you can give me. I gave these books to my son for his birthday back in September and he hasn't been able to read them
