The Girl on the Beach, by Charles Todd, is the first of two free pre-orders in the Kindle store store tonight. This one is most likely a new short story or novella in the Bess Crawford Mystery series and will release at the same time as An Impartial Witness ($10.99), the second in the series, on releases Aug 31.

Mysterious Profile #24: Ian Rutledge, also by Charles Todd, is the second of two free pre-orders in the Kindle store store tonight. This one releases on October 12 and fits somewhere into the Ian Rutledge series (obviously), but again doesn't appear to be a full novel from that series. I'd bet that it was originally published in the Mysterious Bookshop's newsletter (although I could not find that issue, just the current on that mentions that the Mysterious Profile series is on hiatus). The next release in this series will be A Lonely Death, next January, but it isn't listed at Amazon yet.

A special edition of Buddha, by Deepak Chopra, is free to pre-order in the Kindle store. The original edition is still selling for $10.99 and this one claims to contain bonus material. Based on the publication dates and the subject matter, I'd bet it is an excerpt from his upcoming title Muhammad: A Story of the Last Prophet ($10.99; available Sept 21).

Book Description

Bestselling author Deepak Chopra brings the Buddha back to life in this gripping novel of the young prince who abandoned his inheritance to discover his true calling. This iconic journey changed the world forever, and the truths revealed continue to influence every corner of the globe today.

A young man in line for the throne is trapped in his father's kingdom and yearns for the outside world. Betrayed by those closest to him, Siddhartha abandons his palace and princely title. Alone and face-to-face with his demons, he becomes a wandering monk and embarks on a spiritual fast that carries him to the brink of death. Ultimately recognizing his inability to conquer his body and mind by sheer will, Siddhartha transcends his physical pain and achieves enlightenment.

Although we recognize Buddha today as an icon of peace and serenity, his life story was a tumultuous and spellbinding affair filled with love and sex, murder and loss, struggle and surrender. From the rocky terrain of the material world to the summit of the spiritual one, Buddha captivates and inspires—ultimately leading us closer to understanding the true nature of life and our selves.
