The books were suppose to go on sale last November but did not because the Pottermore site could not handle the traffic it had from the Beta testers, never mind opening it to the public. At the time, Pottermore said that the site would open to the public sometime in the first half of 2012. They did not give a specific date. The assumption was that when Pottermore went public, so would the store that sells the e-books.

Since then, there was a poll asking people about how they read the series and a bunch of questions regarding the e-book. The poll was open to the public and is now closed. They have not released the results from the poll.

There was concern on this site and others that the poll might be an indication that JKR is not going to release the e-books when Pottermore opened. She has been reluctant to release the e-books (even though she has and uses a Kindle) for some reason (piracy is the biggest). Moving from statements that the e-books were coming and a deal with Sony to release a special edition Harry Potter e-reader to suddenly asking about if there was a need for the e-books was jarring.

So we have no idea when Pottermore will open to the public or if the e-books will be sold at that time.
