I'll second the DRM stance. It's just unnecessary trouble for the sake of preventing piracy.
It fails at that, as any IRC search will tell you...

Project Gutenberg is a great resource. Watch Amazon for free books, too, often the author will distribute them without the Kindle DRM outside of the Kindle store (MetaGame by Sam Landstrom is an example)
