Splitting by Format make poor sense in most cases. What if you have 2 formats of a SINGLE title? They are now separated and the metadata is also.

If you must split, Pick something that clearly is separate and will not be needed at the same time (usually things, like a Dictionary): Fiction vs Non-Fiction. Cookbooks?
