Yep, I have several friends with AT&T (most with iPhones).
Countless times they've had no or poor reception and I've had good reception with Verizon. Never has the opposite been true in my experience.
I've had Verizon for years, get a 20% discount for being a state employee as well, so it's a no brainer for me. Though I think there's a similar discount with AT&T.
