Galen [129–199/217 A.D.]
Exhortation to the Study of the Arts, Especially Medicine
Translated by James Joseph Walsh, M.D., LL.D., Litt.D., Sc.D. (1865–1942)
1930
Why study the arts? Galen considers alternatives, such as the idle lives of the rich, male prostitution and professional athletes. He notes that artisans cannot practice their crafts into old age because of bodily weakness, whereas those who profess the liberal arts can carry on despite ageing. Medicine is a good choice and pays well.
