Releasing a device using Android 2.3 at this point in time is the same as building a new computer and then running a 32-bit version of Windows Vista on it. You don't do that, if you don't have a VERY good reason to.

2.3 is probably the most modern build they can meet the hardware/display compatablity requirements on.
