If it does happen with every book the problem might be a corrupted database which could be fixed by logging out and then back in to your account, or some other software problem which might be fixed with a factory reset. Something to try before returning the device anyway.
By logging out of your account you will lose some information about sideloaded books such as the reading status (which books have been finished etc.) and shelves. A factory reset will wipe everything, and all sideloaded books will need to be reloaded just as if it was a new device.
In both cases if you use ADE you should make a copy of the .adobe-digital-editions directory on the device and copy it back afterwards, or else you will need to reauthorize the device from ADE.
