If your 650 appears as a drive, Windows might be able to 'repair' it.
Completely quit Calibre (nothing can be using the drive. Even windows explorer.)

(NB Instructions are for XP, but should be similar on W7)
Open My computer
Right-click on the 'Sony' drive with the problem.
Properties: Tools: 'Check disk for Errors' button
Tick the repair option.

'Go, start, do_it!' whatever
If it comes back with an 'in-use' message, some program still has hooks into that drive. (I set my A/V to ignore the reader device) and you are stuck re-formatting the storage as originally suggested.
