"War with the Newts" is an sci-fi novel written by Czech author Karel Čapek. An intelligent species of salamander is discovered in Indonesia, and is quickly exploited. First, as pearl divers and eventually practically replacing the human workforce.
The book is an amusing satire of the society and politics of the 1930s.
A good read, if a bit unusual.
Čapek also coined the word "robot" in his play "R.U.R."(Rossum's Universal Robots) to mean automaton. In the original Czech, "robota" means drudgery or servitude.
