The sales people made it pretty clear that Mountain Lion was available, but I did buy from an Apple Store and sales people typically regard me as being more technically literate than themselves. So
perhaps I was more aware of the update than the average computer buyer.

Being a part of the Android world, most of this actually didn't have a big impact on me. That does leave Mountain Lion feeling a bit like a Windows service pack (most of the UI tweaks are minor and a few security enhancements). But, over all, the iCloud bit with improved integration is probably a good reason for most Mac users to upgrade.
