how to tell the framework to rescan /mnt/us/documents ?

Hi,
is there any way (from the user interface, or from a script) to
tell the kindle to rescan /mnt/us/documents so that new
files appear in the 'Home screen' ?
It appears that the Kindle does a rescan when you detach the
usb interface, or when you download a file (of a supported format,
e.g. .txt) from the browser. However if i manually create a file in
the directory from a shell on the kindle, i don't see the content
appear in the Home (though modification to the file are immediately
visible)

thanks
luigi
