I think people demanding saving content on them misunderstood the concept - they were nothing more than a tech-ed (and non messy) wipeable board replacement.
the company making them mad IMO two mistakes from the beginning on:

1.) more different sizes from small pocket and planner-binders up to chalk- whiteboard replacements for class- and meeting rooms.
2.) no fixed unreplaceable battery from the beginning on; maybe no batt at all
if these things really need only a small "spark" of electricity to wipe, a short-time collector (condensator?)+ a soar cell would have been sufficient.

btw. as this thing ws already mentioned in another thread, and some ppl wrote they use some kind of scanpen which requires special dotted paper:
wacom anounced a biro called inkling which does the same on every paper.
