Genres aren't universal. The sci fi/fantasy genre in most non-English speaking European countries consists mostly of translated English-language works, with, occasionally, a handful of writers in the native language.

It goes the other way, of course - the Heimatroman genre isn't really popular in the US; and while manga has a certain popularity in the US (if it is a genre...), it exists mostly in translation.

It's interesting why this is so, of course.
