Unfortunately, Kindle doesn't read .Doc or .Rtf files, so you will have to convert them to its native format Mobi/Prc, or to PDF. If your files contain mostly text the result will look nice.
Instead of converting to Mobi/Prc I prefer to use PDF, change the page size in Microsoft Word to A5, thin margins, a font without sheriffs sized 12-14. That's because Mobi/Prc are somehow (in my opinion) limited to HTML format.
You can transfer your files with a USB cable connected to your computer.
Kindle doesn't change any file you save in it. If it's a format it knows, it will be displayed.
