I've never had any problems with it on my iPhone 3G running 3.1.3. From the sound of toddos's post, it seems like the issue is to do with how Bluefire handles being multitasked, and iOS 3 just doesn't have multitasking. So that probably explains why I haven't come across the issue. Sorry that isn't useful information, but toddos's Backgrounder tip seems to have been well-tested. The Bluefire FAQ even directly suggests it:
