I wrote the Merge code.
1) It keeps the cursor on the merged book record, at least that's how it works for me. I remember it took me a while to figure out how to keep the highlight on that record when records were being deleted from above the remaining record.
2) "M" is the shortcut key command for Merge with Delete Others.
