Well the one thing you can do is turn on Automerge (which does use title and author for comparisons, rather than title only) in Preferences -> Adding books. If you are concerned about it overwriting when it shouldn't then choose the "Create new record for each duplicate format" suboption, that way you can have manual control over identifying duplicates in your leisure using the Find Duplicates plugin.
