Honoré de Balzac: A Drama On The Seashore
(Une drame au bord de la mer)
Translated by Katharine Prescott Wormeley
A short story of about 7,500 words, set in Le Croisic in south Brittany.
A poor fisherman and his wife are facing ruin because of their violent and feckless son. The father takes desperate measures …
I have restored accents and italics and added a picture of Le Croisic today. Balzac presents it as a grim and forbidding place. In fact it is a picturesque fishing village, with pleasant walks, a couple of adequate beaches and many excellent fish restaurants, where I have spent several peaceful holidays.
