You may wish to install Button Savior. Some here have uninstalled SoftKeys after using Button Savior. No configuration needed. Open the app once and a very small button on the side of the screen appears.

Install Home Switcher (free in Market) if you haven't already. You can use it to switch between your launcher and the stock home screen.
