Probably a dumb ePub question...

This is probably a dumb question, but I've read the ePub stickies and the epub entry at wikipedia and it's still unclear for me:

Sony uses ePUB for their books, or they will. Barnes and Noble says the Nook will support ePUB. So can a book purchased in the Sony store be read on the Nook out of the box, or does the ePUB file need to be "relieved" of any DRM before it can be read by a non-sony device?

Sorry for the probably basic question, and if I missed it in a sticky I am sorry!
