Sony may have 2 reasons:
1. They want people to buy separate devices for the HDMI video-on-demand stuff like the Google TV box or some Blu-ray player.
2. Nvidia Tegra2 is not very good at playing back 1080p video anyway (no high profile high bitrates h264 mkv support) so for HDMI stuff and overall better performance, Sony should have chosen a newer faster processor.
