How does ereader store bookmarks and notes?

I'm wondering where this data is kept. I have noticed with mobireader that annotations are cross platform (a feature that I love). My annotations on my palm are still there when I pick up the same ebook on a different reader. ie I can read a book on both my desktop and my palm and the bookmarks transfer seamlessly so I always can pick up where I left off.

This doesn't seem to be the case for ereader. On my desktop ereader remembers where it was last time I read on my desktop, but doesn't know anything about the bookmarks I placed while reading on my palm.

Is there a way to make this work? I'd prefer to do my reading in ereader, but this feature is essential for me.
