Cummins, Maria S: The Lamplighter, v1, 26 March 2010.

Maria S. Cummins [1827–1866]
The Lamplighter [1854]

A Bildungsroman, telling how an abused orphan is adopted by a lamplighter, and learns Christian principles from a blind woman, and then spreads goodness and light to others. The novel uses a lot of metaphors about light.

From Wikipedia:
The Lamplighter is a sentimental novel written by Maria Susanna Cummins published on March 1, 1854. The Lamplighter was Cummins's first novel and was an immediate best-seller, selling 20,000 copies in twenty days. The work sold 40,000 in eight weeks, and within five months it had sold 65,000. At the time it was second in sales only to Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. It sold over 100,000 copies in Britain and was translated into multiple different languages.

This was converted at the request of a member. I have preserved the original typography, so “haven’t” appears as “have n’t”. I’ve also added a few pictures, as well as a cover, TOC etc..
