I don't know where you live but I've noticed Amazon has started a "See a Kindle in your City" forum.

If you're comfortable with it, you might use that (or these boards) as a way to test drive a Kindle or other reader in person. If you're in the Los Angeles area, I'd be happy to give you a test.
