By The Author of “Elizabeth and Her German Garden”
Elizabeth von Arnim [Mary Annette Beauchamp], Countess von Arnim, Countess Russell. (1866–1941)
Macmillan and Co., London, 1921.
A vulnerable young woman is swept off her feet by a strong, handsome man, whose wife has died in mysterious circumstances. They marry and she is taken to the house where the first wife died…
Yes, the plot, so far, does sound similar to Daphne du Maurier’s “Rebecca” (not published until 1938). And, like “Rebecca” this novel is named after the dead wife.
However, this novel turns into a very black comedy indeed; showing the dangers when a passive girl meets a totally self-centred man.
