Windows is an *open* OS.
The OEMs have a lot of say about what ships atop their hardware. In fact a lot of the "bloat", "crapware", and instability that many ascribe to Windows has nothing to do with MS.

In fact, Amazon trumping Nook that way is not unprecedented.
Quite a few MS competitors over the years have gotten their products preinstalled on Windows PCs beside or instead of Microsoft's product. Suites like WordPerfectOffice and Lotus SmartSuite come to mind.
