If Amazon wanted to have a physical presence, it would be better-served with kiosks in select locations (not bookstores) that access Amazon online, or small displays of the Kindle and online book catalog in non-competing retail outlets (malls, big-box stores, air/sea/railports).

I think Kiosks would be a great way to sell eBooks for a wide variety of devices. Everywhere the device is sold a Kiosk could be close by in the same store providing ongoing customer contact with the store they purchased their reader in. Many retailers would welcome continued value instead of a one time sale.
