An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge is a short story by Ambrose Bierce and was originally published in 1890.
It's the story of a Mr. Peyton Farquhar, a man who is just about to be hanged for sympathizing with the Confederates. It's famous for its twist ending and irregular time sequence.
I actually found out about this story by reading that it was an inspiration for some great movies--I don't wanna say which movies because I don't want to give the ending away.
It was also the inspiration for a very highly-rated episode of The Twilight Zone here in the states.
This is only about 20 pages or so on the reader, so I strongly recommend reading it if you get a chance to fit it in between your other books.
