Fergus Hume [1859–1932]
The Bishop’s Secret [1900]
(This novel has also been published under the title, “Bishop Pendle”)
Bishop Pendle comes to believe that he is not lawfully married, which is not good news for an Anglican bishop. And there is a local murder. On top of that, his son wants to marry a barmaid.
The novel is a sort of hybrid between a Victorian mystery and Anthony Trollope’s “Barchester Towers.”
