I wouldn't get too caught up in what formats a reader can handle. The Calibre ebook management program will convert from or to most of the formats that readers use as long as they aren't DRMed. Having said that, readers that support Adobe Digital Editions files will let you check out library ebooks and purchase from more online book stores. From your post, it sounds like you already have some ADE books. It would take a bit of work for you to get those to play on a Kindle.

The matrix is a great place to start. Many of the readers have their own dedicated forums on MobileRead; they're a good place to go with specific questions. While Sony and Amazon are the big players, there are several others on the market that might meet your needs.
