What you are calling "demo mode" may actually be "fake usb drive" mode, which is what the kindle does when it is in low power mode because of a discharged battery. The reason it does that is to prevent a host PC with "green" energy saving enabled from turning off power to the USB port that you need for recharging a kindle. Low power mode in the kindle turns off the flash memory and even the main SDRAM memory, to minimize power consumption and keep total power usage under 100mA including the battery charging current.

A bricked kindle may become stuck in low power mode. You can try booting to other modes using MfgTool, available in the "select boot" thread in the dev corner forum (also linked from the "simple debricking" sticky there).
