I thought about that, given that he's not my idol either and I've got you beat on the number of years. But I wanted an example of an established writer who writes really, really long books.

Anything over 120K is toast for a "debut" author. I "sort of" understand the business logic behind that, but overall I agree with the concept that a book is as long as it needs to be to tell the story.

The result of this survey so far, indicates that "debut" authors going the trad publishing route are at a disadvantage with a large portion of readers who like long novels.
