The more this pans out the more strange it seems that Apple have decided to use their own DRM. Surely the choice of custom DRM can only be to try to lock users into their own store? But if they then allow a Kindle app and a B&N app and an Adobe Adept app, when iBooks is itself a separate app for download, they might as well have gone with an industry standard DRM in the first place.
