I was thinking about the plots rather than the characters. Thorndyke had a number of sidekicks, and Polton played a far more important role than Mrs Polton.
And both were set in an age where domestic service was far more common than it is now.
There was also Poirot and Hastings. TV producers found it necessary to include Hastings in every story, although he only appeared in a few books.
