Voltaire: Lord Chesterfield’s Ears, v.1, 1 November 2008.

François-Marie Arouet de Voltaire (1694–1778)
Lord Chesterfield’s Ears, A True Story. (1775)
(Les Oreilles du comte de Chesterfield et le chapelain Goudman)
Anonymous translation.
Published by R. Carlile, 135 Fleet Street, London.1826.

Lord Chesterfield’s ears prove to be a grave inconvenience to a young clergyman. This satirical tale also discusses freedom of the will and whether the soul exists.

This tale was not included in the Morley/Fleming edition of “The Works of Voltaire”—presumably because some parts were considered too indelicate.
