Received a "Rebooting your Kindle" message first time I ran KUAL which I cancelled off then KUAL ran as expected.
Noticed a weird reboot (non kual-related) the first time I accessed the OSK.
Symptom did not repeat.
USBnetworking needed a reinstall.
