It didn't affect the size of the epub because epub is a compressed file (zip). I don't know about other formats. If they are not compressed you could end up with huge file sizes, if you had giant images.
The resizing and resampling was a good idea anyway because it means the reader doesn't have to use its CPU power to do it, so page displays and formatting might well be faster.
