I tend to ignore a work's 'genre' and labeling and seek out fiction that goes beyond who did what to whom - that explores the 'whys,' and how those 'whys' relate to (and should be important to) the reader.
Blood Meridian is excellent. As I posted on the literary fiction thread a few days ago, I just started Tea Obreht's The Tiger's Wife, and the writing is phenomenal. Also, a recent, quirky re-read that surprised me was Peter Matthiessen's Far Tortuga.
