It depends on how you define direct sunlight. I do have to take off my sunglasses to read, but I can read it in the sun. I can't read it if the Sun or any other bright light source is shining directly on it, but I can solve that by shifting slightly so the light source isn't directly on it. So far, I haven't found it a problem at all. Since I do have a Sony 505, I might choose to take the Sony with me to the beach rather than the iPad, but that's more to avoid getting sand on my iPad than worry about not being able to read it.
