France, Anatole: Lucifer, v1, 24 November 2009.

Anatole France (1844–1924)
Lucifer (1895)
Translated by Alfred Allinson. (1854–?)

The devil appears to an artist to complain about his unflattering portrait on an altarpiece.
This short story was inspired by an anecdote about the painter Spinello, in Vasari’s “Lives of the Artists.”
The painting referred to in the story seems only to exist in fragments, so the cover shows another work by Spinello.
